Het is een mooi alternatief om de games van vorige generaties, maar ook zeker recente games te spelen. Dit zonder dat je telkens de portemonnee moet trekken voor een losse aanschaf. Voor een vast bedrag per maand kan je diverse games downloaden of streamen naar je console, alsook de pc. De service is inmiddels al een lange tijd beschikbaar en in dit informatieve artikel zetten we alle belangrijke aspecten uiteen, zodat je een (nog) beter beeld van de service krijgt.
Andere manier voor entertainment
Met het grote aanbod van games is PlayStation Now een interessante service om aan je entertainment te komen. De keuze is erg breed qua genres en de service is erg flexibel ingericht. Omdat er genoeg bij komt kijken, kun je hier alle ins en outs vinden. Het is namelijk meer dan alleen games streamen en het kan een waardevolle aanvulling zijn op jouw manier van entertainment ervaren, naast dat je natuurlijk via PlayStation Plus ook toegang tot games hebt.
Wat voor soort content?
Er zijn meer dan 700+ games die je kunt vinden in de PlayStation Now bibliotheek. Dit aantal neemt maandelijks toe, omdat Sony nieuwe games blijft toevoegen, maar dat is tweeledig waarover zo meer. Een makkelijke onderverdeling is dat je PS2, PS3 en PS4-games kunt downloaden of streamen. Je kan op dit moment nog geen PS5-games spelen via deze service. Maar dat is niet erg en ook wel begrijpelijk. Enerzijds omdat de voorgaande consoles genoeg te bieden hebben, anderzijds omdat er nog niet zoveel PS5-games zijn, als Sony überhaupt van plan is dat ooit toe te voegen.
Het is geen geheim dat de PlayStation 5 helaas niet je oude PS2 of PS3-discs kan lezen, dus voor het spelen ben je aangewezen op het oudere platform. Hierin vormt PlayStation Now een mooie overbrugging, want door de games te streamen kun je de klassiekers van weleer alsnog beleven én dat op de PlayStation 5. Heb je bijvoorbeeld de Killzone franchise gemist die verspreid over voorgaande Sony consoles verschenen is? Dan biedt PlayStation Now jou de mogelijkheid om deze games alsnog op de PlayStation 5 te spelen.
Het aanbod verschilt van tijd tot tijd, waarmee we even terugkomen op ons eerder aangehaalde punt omtrent het toevoegen van games. Het gros van de content is van de oude stapel, maar er zijn ook recente games in de PlayStation Now bibliotheek te vinden. Dit van zowel Sony als third-party uitgevers en het zijn zeker niet de minste games. Bij dat soort Triple-A titels, voornamelijk PS4-games, zit er een nuance aan. Deze games worden namelijk tijdelijk beschikbaar gesteld, dus op den duur worden ze weer uit de service gehaald.
In dat kader is het advies om per PS4-titel altijd even goed te kijken wat beschikbaar is en tot wanneer. Het zou immers zonde zijn dat een game verdwijnt terwijl je middenin het avontuur zit. Via de maandelijkse PlayStation Now updates hier op PSX-Sense stellen we je daarvan op de hoogte.
Downloaden of streamen
PlayStation Now heeft onder meer twee manieren om een game te spelen. Je kunt een game downloaden of streamen. Met downloaden haal je de gehele game op je systeem binnen en speel je de game native af, alsof je het digitaal aangeschaft hebt. Zolang je geabonneerd bent op de service, zul je de game dus op een ‘normale’ wijze kunnen spelen, zolang deze aangeboden wordt via PlayStation Now. De downloadoptie is bij veel games van toepassing, maar niet bij allemaal. Dus als je de optie niet tegenkomt, dan is het spelen enkel mogelijk via de streamoptie. Je ziet dus niets over het hoofd, dat is een bepaalde keuze die door Sony is gemaakt.
Door het streamen van de game hoef je natuurlijk niet een bepaalde hoeveelheid aan gigabytes binnen te halen, wat ruimte op je console scheelt. Bovendien kun je direct met de game aan de slag. Het enige nadeel is dat de service de game op voorhand als het ware voor je klaar moet zetten. Dat is echter zo gepiept en het kent verder geen vertragingen of obstakels, wat het dus erg gebruiksvriendelijk maakt.
Omdat streamen natuurlijk direct via het internet gaat, wordt een goede (stabiele) verbinding geadviseerd. Dit zorgt immers voor de meest soepele ervaring. Dit komt echter wel met een nadeel tegenover het downloaden van een game, wat even benoemd moet worden. Er zit namelijk een verschil in de kwaliteit tussen streamen en het spelen van een gedownloade game. Je ziet – bij streamen – dat er een hoop visuele kwaliteit gecomprimeerd wordt en ook heeft de game te maken met een kleine hoeveelheid input-lag. Het is iets wat onvermijdelijk is bij het streamen van games op dit moment; de verwachting is dat dit in de komende jaren beter zal worden. Hiervoor is men echter afhankelijk van de techniek die voor handen is. Toch is de responsie goed genoeg om games, die van zichzelf een lage input-lag hebben, te spelen via PlayStation Now.
Gebruiksgemak
We hebben eerder laten vallen dat PlayStation Now een flexibele service is, dat lichten we graag even toe. PlayStation Now is beschikbaar op de PS4, PS5 en ook op pc. Zo heb je meerdere mogelijkheden om van deze dienst gebruik te maken, waardoor je niet gebonden bent aan een specifiek platform. In het geval van een pc is het wel noodzakelijk om een controller te gebruiken, die je eventueel los kunt aanschaffen mocht je niet over een PlayStation console beschikken.
Op de PlayStation 5 is PlayStation Now, net zoals de PlayStation Store, geïntegreerd in het dashboard van de console. Je hoeft dus geen aparte app te downloaden, op te starten en andere ongein te doorlopen om bij de beschikbare content te komen. Alles verloopt hierin lekker vlot en je hebt ook alles bij de hand. Eenmaal in de applicatie krijg je binnen PlayStation Now een overzichtelijke indelingen voor je kiezen. Hierdoor kun je op een efficiënte wijze de bibliotheek verkennen. Ook kun je games zoeken op genre, net zoals per Sony console.
Ook op de pc is het allemaal zeer gemakkelijk. Je dient daar wel een specifieke applicatie voor te downloaden, maar deze is erg licht voor je systeem en slechts rond de 300MB groot, dus heel veel heeft het niet om handen. Je hoeft ook niet bang te zijn voor beperkingen als je pc wat aan de zwakke kant is. De PlayStation Now applicatie is in feite een doorgeefluik voor het streamen, waardoor het op de meeste computers zonder problemen zal werken. Het enige wat hier nog bij komt, is dat je een DualShock 4 nodig hebt voor de meeste optimale ervaring. Mocht een game toevallig geen touchpad ondersteuning hebben, dan is een DualShock 3 ook voldoende.
Een extra laag van gebruiksgemak
Zoals benoemd is het gebruik van de applicatie en de werking erg prettig en efficiënt. Dit komt het gebruiksgemak ten goede, maar er speelt nog een ander belangrijke set features mee. Die vormen als het ware een extra laag binnen de totale gebruikerservaring, wat we graag even benadrukken. Dat is namelijk hoe de service omgaat met savedata van games op verschillende platformen.
Ongeacht waarop je PlayStation Now gebruikt, de service ziet of jij van een bepaalde game savedata in de cloud hebt staan (enkel mogelijk via PlayStation Plus). Indien dat het geval is, dan vraagt PlayStation Now of je deze data wilt kopiëren naar de service, zodat je die kunt gebruiken. Dit is ideaal voor als je via PlayStation Now op console of pc verder wilt met een game waar je ooit mee begonnen bent. Met name in situaties als je een game of console verkocht hebt, is dit een uitstekende oplossing om toch je avontuur voort te kunnen zetten terwijl je niet meer over het oorspronkelijke materiaal beschikt. Zo kun je altijd met je game verder via PlayStation Now, daar waar je gebleven was op een console.
